First, it detects if the field value is an array or not. If it isn't, then it uses the existing setup for a single file setup. If it is, then it converts the value into an array and iterates on the files individually so they're then listed appropriately.

This doesn't handle editing of the field at this point, but it's better than not even being able to display the field value correctly (which is what this fixes).
