but with windows they can monitor everything. plug a usb drive in. they can see all the files probably. run a ps script. they know. attempt to run something as admin. logged.

chromebooks dont let you download exe or run powershell scripts so nothing like that is logged. they also run a lot faster because they dont have lots of monitoring software and bloat from the school/microsoft.

honestly i dont think our school admins check the logs anyway

it does make sense but they should make chromeOS a bit lighter, you can have a lightweight os that still looks good

I installed fedora on my personal cb because audio drivers don't work on ubuntu based distros and fedora comes with gnome, I didn't install chrome since I'm not a fan of proprietary software but it actually is not too much slower than chromeOS, do better google and I have a daulboot so its as close to side by side without using chroot or vms so no cruton just daulboot

I wish I could do this since I also use arch (btw) but my computer is a late 2013 iMac so good luck using it at school lol

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro with Mac OS Catalina Patcher, and the compatibility is terrible. I have to keep Chrome downgraded to v115 or else it crashes upon launch despite Google saying that it still supports my current OS version as the minimum for the latest release. 🤷

With Boot Camp and Windows 10 installed on a second drive, everything is still supported and works much better than OSX (neither are meant to run). I don't think the majority of users are updating to Windows 11 anytime soon no matter how much Microsoft urges, so that certainly works if you don't really use exclusive Mac OS features such as native iMessage support or whatever (common use of MacBooks actually).

you should try linux, it is a miracle to my iMac, way faster and don't worry about drivers since almost everything will work natively aside from nvidea drivers

I don't even think Mac is very good at being managed by an administrator, but it's better quality than a Chromebook. Probably not the user experience every young student wants and understands.

I can probably agree, linux is probably best at being managed and best os in general

nah linux is hard to manage because no mdm companies develop good apps for it. chromeos is the easiest to mange (trust me. ive manged windows machines and it is harder) so thats why schools use it. you just set policies in one location and it just works. macos can be managed, but you have to use apples solution, which probaly costs a lot of money. they have a school manager thing

macOS is actually very easy to modify if you know what your doing and one of the things that can be modified is the policies, I belive you can use apple configurator 2 to do this for free and anyways, about extended support although its definitly not official, opencore legacy patcher is a thing and can bypass the macOS requirements, it seems to run relatively well on my late 2013 21.5 " iMac with an hdd (will switch to external ssd) and I have a linux mint daulboot as opencore legacy patcher broke my arch linux install

Interesting thing, they are now (3 weeks into the school year) allowing us CS students to swap our Chromebooks for the last remaining Windows laptops that they have.

Really goes to show the quality of the Windows PCs that they originally had and wanted us to use. Half of them didn't even turn on lmfao.

Imma stay with BYOD though, since those fuckers patched all the Windows exploits.
