What

Currently, the search block displays a full search bar, which can take up significant space, especially on mobile devices. This feature request is to add an option for a standalone search icon that, when clicked, expands into a search bar or a pop-up search field.

Why

This feature will solve several issues:

  1. Improves usability by saving valuable screen space on mobile devices.
  2. Enhances design flexibility for themes where a full search bar may not align with the aesthetic.
  3. Offers a cleaner, more minimalistic option for users who prefer a compact header.

Here's a ticket where the user requested such a feature - 9262741-zd-a8c

How

  • Add a toggle in the block editor to switch between displaying the full search bar and a standalone search icon.
  • The icon could trigger a modal or dropdown search field when clicked, ensuring functionality remains intact.
  • Include customization options for the icon’s appearance, position, and animation effects.

Hey there! Thanks for opening this. From what you've described though, this option does exist. See the following videos showing a few different approaches:

Hey @annezazu , Thanks so much for providing the details and showing me this. You are absolutely right! I got confused because a previous HE on the ticket mentioned that there was no option available but the second video highlights exactly what the user wanted. I will let both the user and HE know, and thanks again for letting me know this, Apologies for any trouble!

No trouble at all! There's so much to learn and know about our wonderful products :) I'll go ahead and close this out. Thanks for updating the user and the HE.
