Enabling backup/snapshots on the internal AKS storageaccount

A quick question, as I'm not sure what the possible implications could be.

I would like to set up a non-complex backup/snapshot solution for the Azure File Shares that I'm currently using in the cluster (mounted as PVC). Naively, the Azure Storage Account that AKS automatically creates should be able to be configured to interact with a native Azure backup solution like the Backup Vault? I'm hesitant to configure things on top of the AKS-defined resources as that seems brittle.

My current 'clean' alternative is to use an external storage account that I then use with statically defined PV/PVC. That external storage account is then configured with Vault for backups.

Any thoughts on this? I know Velero is proposed as the backup tooling for AKS, but that seems too complex for my use case.
