In a workshop, it's valuable to display a QR that is at the same time "big enough" (medium size), and that is not 100% opaque to attendees who would try to scan it. The domain name prefix helps them go to a proper webpage to learn more about the app or to install it.
The 9 extra characters don't hurt scannability too much. It turns out that the complexity of the QR code (the number of small squares) is the same with or without the domain name prefix.
