This object would work a little differently: it would exist in many star systems at the same time.
What I mean by that is that objects left on its surface should persist and could be found at the same place in another system.
This anomaly could then be used by the user as some kind of "portable" inventory that don't fit in the spaceship or else.
This mechanism will not be told to the player explicitly. Instead, a dark knight instance will be placed by hand in one of the starting systems with a research station orbiting it. The player will be encouraged to interact with it through the narrative (an npc could forget something on its surface, and could be later be found in another system thus triggering some kind of "aha moment" for the player.
Beyond that, if/when multiplayer becomes a thing, it will be interesting to allow some objects from one player to be visible on the dark knight of another player. Some kind of low probability shenanigan.
