LibreSprite is a free and open source program for creating and animating your sprites.

Real-time animation previews.

Libresprite is a fork of Aseprite (the last free version of it).

I test it on RPI4(8GB) works well, but sadly there is no flatpak, no file for installation. You have to make it from the source so it will work on the RPI.

Looks like libresprite is abandoned compared to asesprite. The source code for asesprite seems to be available on github, just not for redistribution. That is not a problem here, as pi-apps does not actually distribute anything, but rather downloads from other places: could be a third-party build or straight from source.

As Pi-Apps uses scripts which can do anything a human could do, we could in this instance have each Pi download the source code and compile it locally.

Apart from licensing differences, are there any other advantages to libresprite over aseprite?

To tell the truth - Aseprite is better, has more options, more up to date. Yes.
But as I test it on windows the issue is like you say:

  1. License (you have to buy it or build it from scratch by yourself), not sure if this would be an issue for pi apps
  2. As I tested Aseprite on RPI, it does not work. There was some "dev version 0.95?" of it,
    but it was laggy, slow, you could not even choose full screen mode.

So this is why I switch to Libresprite on Raspberry, because it works better,
you can use full screen mode.

Saying that - BUT - if license is not an issue here, and.. somehow the newest version of Aseprite would work on RPI,
and it would work without any issues, heck, I would love to see that 😄

Aseprite seems a bit of trouble to compile. It can be done but I'd like a dedicated maintainer/contributor to handle script writing and keeping it updated. AUR has a start for anyone wanting to be that person https://aur.archlinux.org/cgit/aur.git/tree/PKGBUILD?h=aseprite
