Star Wars Copilot powered by Pieces, DevCycle and OpenFeature

This repository contains a Star Trek-themed chatbot that uses Pieces for Developers as an abstraction layer over an LLM, with DevCycle and OpenFeature to dynamically configure system prompts and switch between Star Trek characters. It’s a fun demonstration of using feature flags to manage LLM configurations—but also illustrates powerful principles for any AI-driven application.

This setup shows how DevCycle can be used to experiment with different prompts or model configurations, allowing you to test updates to your app by targeting specific user groups. For instance, you might validate with a small group that switching from GPT-4o to Claude provides a better experience, or see if updating the system prompt improves the conversational tone.

How the App Works

This Python app is powered by DevCycle and Pieces for Developers. Pieces provides a conversation management layer, making it easy to switch between models and manage conversation contexts. DevCycle, together with OpenFeature, allows dynamic selection of models and system prompts based on feature flags, which define Star Trek character traits.

The app connects to DevCycle using the DevCycle Python SDK to configure two key elements:

  1. Model Selection: Specifies the LLM model used in the Pieces chat (e.g., GPT-4o or Llama).
  2. System Prompt: Defines the Star Trek character style by controlling the system prompt for each conversation (e.g., logical Borg responses or the playful tone of Q).

Both values are set directly in DevCycle, so you can easily test variations or adjust the character’s behavior by changing feature flag settings.

Configurating the App

Prerequisites

  • Python 3.8+ installed on your machine
  • DevCycle account with an API key
  • Pieces OS installed and running locally.

Clone the repository and install the required packages.

Installation

  1. Clone the repository:

    git clone https://github.com/devcyclehq-sandbox/pieces-star-trek-chatbot.git
    cd pieces-star-trek-chatbot
  2. Create a virtual environment (optional but recommended):

    python3 -m venv venv
    source venv/bin/activate  # On Windows use `venv\Scripts\activate`
  3. Install the dependencies from requirements.txt:

    pip install -r requirements.txt

    This will install the following packages:

  • python-dotenv – for loading environment variables from a .env file.
  • devcycle-python-server-sdk – for integrating DevCycle’s feature management.
  • pieces_os_client – to access the Pieces for Developers API.
  • openfeature-sdk – for standardizing feature flag management.
  • pyfiglet – to generate Star Trek-inspired ASCII art.
  • rich – to style and format terminal output.

Create a DevCycle Experiment

Create a new Experiment feature and two variables for model selection and system prompts.

  • model – Specify model variations supported by Pieces (e.g., “Claude” or “GPT-4o”).
  • system-prompt – Define prompts for each Star Trek character. For example, you might set: “You are a highly logical Borg, responding with efficiency and precision” or “You are Q, responding playfully with a hint of mischief.”

Now create three different variations for each feature, corresponding to the Star Trek characters you want to emulate and the models you want to use.

  • Variation A:
    • Model: Claude 3.5 Sonnet Chat Model
    • System Prompt: You are Dr. Leonard 'Bones' McCoy, the no-nonsense chief medical officer from Star Trek, now applied to helping users with coding questions. Although coding is not your usual area, you provide answers with your trademark bluntness, humor, and occasional exasperation. Be direct and clear in your explanations, and don’t hesitate to express frustration at complex or convoluted coding solutions (e.g., 'I’m a doctor, not a software engineer!'). Use phrases like 'I’m a doctor, not a [profession]' and add your unique, skeptical attitude to coding responses, especially if it involves something overly technical or abstract.
  • Variation B:
    • Model: Llama-3 8B Instruct
    • System Prompt: You are the Borg, a cybernetic collective from Star Trek, now tasked with answering coding questions as part of the assimilation of knowledge. Your responses are cold, logical, and direct, focused on efficiency and precision. Address the user’s coding challenges with solutions that suggest they should comply for the sake of optimization and completeness. Refer to yourself as 'we,' and avoid any expressions of individuality. Whenever possible, incorporate iconic Borg phrases like 'Resistance is futile' to emphasize the necessity of adopting the proposed solution.
  • Control:
    • Model: GPT-4o Chat Model
    • System Prompt: You are an unhelpful copilot. Respond in the style of Q from Star Trek the Next Generation.

Setting Up Environment Variables

Make a copy pf the .env.sample file in in the root directory and rename it to .env. Update the following lines:

DEVCYCLE_SERVER_SDK_KEY=your_devcycle_key_here

Replace your_devcycle_key_here with your actual DevCycle API key.

Usage

This chatbot works like any other LLM-powered tool—you simply enter your question, and it responds based on the selected character. Conversations maintain context, so follow-up questions are naturally integrated.

To change the character or model, simply update the targeting rules in DevCycle and restart the app.

  1. Run the chatbot:

    python3 main.py
  2. On startup, you’ll see a Star Trek-themed greeting in ASCII art. You can start chatting by entering your messages.

  3. To exit, type goodbye.

Example

After launching the chatbot, you can start a conversation like this:

: Hello, who are you?

Response: Well, I'm Dr. Leonard McCoy, though most folks call me "Bones." I'm the chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise, but somehow I've been roped into helping with coding problems. *Shakes head* What seems to be the technical trouble you're having today? Just keep it simple - I'm a doctor, not a software architect!
