Following on discussion in nexusformat/definitions#1410 (comment), it was said by NIAC that any group or field can be a link, and the specification notes that if so, add a target attribute.

We should check that @target attributes for links are

  • written in case we create our own links
  • not reported as undocumented for links in existing files
  • properly documented using the read_nexus tool
