Managing Python Toolchain Versions and poetry

With uv Python toolchains can be managed without overwriting system tools. Currently uv is not yet in Debian, but there is pipx for installing tools in own venvs, a symlink is placed in $HOME/.local/bin.

$ sudo apt install pipx
$ pipx install uv

List your Python installations:

$ uv python list
cpython-3.13.0-linux-x86_64-gnu     /home/steff/.local/share/uv/python/cpython-3.13.0-linux-x86_64-gnu/bin/python3 -> python3.13
cpython-3.12.7-linux-x86_64-gnu     <download available>
cpython-3.11.10-linux-x86_64-gnu    <download available>
cpython-3.11.2-linux-x86_64-gnu     /usr/bin/python3.11
cpython-3.11.2-linux-x86_64-gnu     /usr/bin/python3 -> python3.11

There is a command to install one of those:

$ uv python install cpython-3.13.0-linux-x86_64-gnu

You can use it like this (TOOLCHAIN_NAME see first column of uv python list):

$ poetry env use $(uv python dir)/TOOLCHAIN_NAME/bin/python

Voilà.
