just in case it might be useful for anybody: I managed to compile openHASP 0.7 using the proposed workflow on gitpod.io for the new

Waveshare ESP32-S3 4.3inch Capacitive Touch Display Development Board, 800×480, 5-point Touch, 32-bit LX7 Dual-core Processor

using the information in the documentation (https://www.waveshare.com/esp32-s3-touch-lcd-4.3.htm and https://www.waveshare.com/wiki/ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-4.3) by adapting the makerfabs-s3-tft4x-rgb.ini

What lib_deps did you add to your platformio.ini?

Sorry leow149, I should better have been a little more precise: I put the content above in a file named user_setups/custom/ws_esp32_s3_touch_lcd_4p3.ini .

Worked for me following this guide:

Thanks @jan1678 for the ini, helped me a lot. Would be great if deactivating backlight will work at some point in future (but is looks like that's a bit complicated on this board).

Thanks for sharing! Working like a charme for me.
I also got the back light working (no pwm).
The issue is that the back light has a dedicated controller (MP3302DJ-LF-Z) and is connected to the io expander(Ch422g)
I decided to solder a wire to the enable pin of the MP3302 and connect it to the sensor pin. Now I can at least turn off the back light on idle (required a cmd!).
I tried using pwm, but although the controller should support it, it did not work, maybe because the input is pulled high or other aspects of the schematic.

I checked and could not find an example of how to handle an io expander via i2c for a dedicated board. This would be needed to use back light without soldering...

One idea is to write a custom thing and somehow listen to the event and init i2c and control the back light from there.

Also only on/off would work but better than no back light control at all.

I agree that on/off is better than nothing, and I think it's mandatory for productive use. However, I don't want to solter on the board. I found a datasheet for the expander, but didn't understand it good enough to code a library. Would be great if somebody with good i2c skills can give it a try :)

Hi, some good and bad news ;)
I managed to get the back light working only with a my_custom enhancement.
But, i had to use a lib only found on waveshare which seems to be a special version of this:

I copied the lib and initialized it in a my_custom.cpp file, and turn of the backlight if sleep !=0... not perfect but working.

After deep look in schematic from our display I've found solution (not perfect) to get PWM Backlight and when we mix "wire solution" (thanks to tuct ) , driver solution to control EXIO2 (thanks to tuct) and remove two components, (resistor and capacitor) then we get full solution to display ON, OFF and DIM.

Because on our display, EXIO2 control not only LED driver but also DISP signal on LCD Display, then simple PWM on EXIO2 will lower voltage also on DISP and as effect will switch off display logic - display to standby. Separating backlight driver (removing resistor) from DISP signal we can get DIM function - Display setting - GPIO6. Removing capacitor is necessary because BACKLIGHT driver need PWM and not analogue signal.
And now we need also to set EXIO2 to LOW level when PWM for backlight is 0 to deactivate LCD Display - because LCD display is still ON even backlight is OFF. Can you (tuct) add this function to the hasp ? Can you share your modification to control EXIO2 in your hasp compilation?

Thank you so much for posting this! I just received this board today, flashed it and am working on my configuration. I also got a 1500 mAh battery and the board seems to work fine with it (I had to reverse the wires of the battery). The board has a charging circuit in it so hopefully I can use it wirelessly.

Note that if you want to charge a battery, read the specs about what it supports and connect the USB-C port labeled UART. The other USB-C port won't charge the battery.

My wishlist:

• Dim display when idle
• Expose battery charge so I can see it in HA and therefore show it on the display

Following the lead of @tuct, I now turn off the backlight when the device is in long idle. Waveshare says that the LCD can't be dimmed, so I guess this will have to do. They also say you can't read the battery level.

I remember some strange noises when enable/disable the display.

Using gpio6 wired to display worked better combined with some config (set gpio pin).

The solution using only software(IOExpander) does NOT work! => openHasp crashes and reboots sometimes on wakeup or the screen stays black at all.
My hunch is that the problem is that the same pin that controls the backlight also controls the display (enabled) pin.
Now this might be a problem because openHasp is not aware that the display is disabled....

What works is the fix already mentioned above => de-couple the backlight and display pin by removing 2 components and than add a wire to use PIN6 of the MCU (=Sensor AD) to control the PWM signal for the backlight.

This works for me now without issues and just the default config for display on openHasp + home assistant can also control the backlight.

Thanks! I wish there was a better way than modifying the board. I'll have to play around with a basic project to see if toggling the backlight (outside of OpenHASP) crashes the board; if it does then the only option would be a modification.

I wasn't convinced it was hardware issue, so I took one of the example LVGL projects and modified it so that the backlight turned on and off every 2 seconds. After about 30 seconds the device rebooted.

I'm going to return the board and try a different one that maybe isn't as quirky. Thanks @tuct and others for your help!

I am quite sure it would work if you could also tell lvgl to stop using the display while it is disabled ;)

I checked some other boards where backlight is working and saw that display is usually always on.
So the mini solder job works great, but if you prefer to not mod your hardware, get another one.
Btw, I tested and without display on, you would save 0,01 to 0,02A at 5V,so about 0.05 to 0.1w.
I don't run on battery, so I don't care ;)

My goal is to run it on battery, so it's kind of important for me to try a different board. I'm not comfortable with surface mount parts, so touching the board could make me lose the whole thing! Will the next board I try be any better? No idea.

Without using openHASP, can I still establish these connections and control the screen through code? I am trying to control the backlight with gpio_set_level(LCD_BL, 0); but the backlight does not turn off.

Make sure you are using a powered USB hub or a power supply that can provide enough power.
Maybe try flash other flasher board.

@fvanroie I was eventually able, After struggling with getting Python working on my computer and figuring out which apps to use for which step of the process and installing and trying so many pointless apps that didn't work (I swear most tutorials and info are gibberish and I'm actually fairly good with electronics and a good learner, it was hard) I was EVENTUALLY able to use ESPtool.py to successfully flash the .bin file to the screen. The word plate showed up on the illuminated screen and I was elated, and now I am still struggling to figure out how to set it up with my home assistant instance 😅 but thank you very much, different flashing tool was the trick. Tasmota and ESP Flash Tools did not work for me

I will link you to the case that I downloaded and modified for mine. It is worthwhile to learn some basic fusion360 or onshape skills If you have electronics and 3D printing as a hobby, but I will say be prepared to spend quite a few hours watching tutorials and following along. But in the end it will probably be worth it if you continue these hobbies.

thank you, managed to compile using gitpod and uploaded with esp flash tool.

This board also has the IO_Expander, connecting GPIO6 to the control pin of the AP3032 seems to work fine even dimming.

got the 4.3 now but that way to small, so i bought this one but the dimming did not work but now its really nice. im going to build it in in my house entry so i can see and manage everything from the screen.

I also have a little buzzing on the screen, Someone sent me this a while back but i do not see a difference.

@maikrolf If you have not done hardware modification (GPIO6) you can't control backlight - it's always ON because is controlled over extra chip on PCB. After hardware mod (look previous post @tuct 9Feb) you can control backlight from OpenHasp.

yes i saw this but this is for a 4.3 inch and i have the 7 inch one. and i have no idear whats modification i need to do there

I originally used the tft_eSPI library, but that won't work on V3, only on V2.

I loaded the linked bin here and modded my display with GPIO6 - works like a charm. very nice. thx u all ;)

But i need to ask. how do i manage, that my display goes off, after a few? in the display settings i checked all, but its not sleeping. if im using "invert BL", it goes off, so it should work ^^

Put in: backlight {"brightness":x} - where X is a value between 0-255.

BUT.....its making noise, when not 100% brightness - i think, its because of the PWM signal ^^

1. Extract ZIP file end you get two bin file inside - "ws_esp32_s3_touch_lcd_4p3_full_8MB_v0.7.0-rc12_bbd96b2.bin" and "ws_esp32_s3_touch_lcd_4p3_ota_v0.7.0-rc12_bbd96b2.bin". "full" is to flash for the first time when no openhasp is installed.
2. Open web Tasmota flasher : https://tasmota.github.io/install/ in CHROME (or EDGE) browser in windows.
3. Select "UPLOAD factory.bin"
4. Select file "ws_esp32_s3_touch_lcd_4p3_full_8MB_v0.7.0-rc12_bbd96b2.bin" form your PC
5. Click "connect" and select serial port where you have connected you display in BOOT mode (USB-C UART)
6. Select your device in pop-up window and then check ERASE DEVICE and then NEXT
7. Wait until finish then re-plug your USB cable and search on WiFi (with your tablet other mobile) new openHASP device and log in.

Those both file are compiled with support for modified hardware for BackLight (GPIO6) for BL-Dimming and 1000Hz to prevent inductor noise.

PS. "OTA" file is always to upload over OTA (update), when you are connected to openHASP over WIFI - openHASP must be installed on first.

Curious if anyone else has had any issues with the display rendering images? I'm seeing some weird pixely effects around the edges between different parts of this image. If that's just how the display is or how the library is then I can live with that but I'm curious if theirs a way to fix this. Also huge thank you to the people who got OpenHASP working on this board, I was able to get it functional very quickly thanks to your hardware.

I think is the problem with color data line from ESP32s3 and LCD controller. This configuration is based on configuration for display "makerfabs-s3-tft4x-rgb.ini" (check post from jan1678 - second post from top) and maybe paraller port data conection for RGB are not correct forLCD controller on Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-4.3 - need to be proof. Another think is deep color space for each display - eg. 16Bit or 18Bit or so. Need to be investigated. This is the reason why color transit for background is not always looks ok.

I try to install on a waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-7 with multiple variants from the nigthly, at least sunton 8084S070C show something in console, but I am not able to install a version, where I can see openhasp configuration on the display. I also try some rc13 files.

If I understand it correct, soldering is necessary for dimming or switch of, without soldering backlight should be on.

Board version is VER1.1.

Any hints how I can get it running?
