Linux equivalent ?

Hi,

This is not an implementation request, just a question : has anyone ever heard of any Linux equivalent to Obtainium, i.e. an app automatically downloads binaries/DEBs/RPMs for apps that aren't available in any repository or store ?

Solely for Debian-based OSes. That's a significant amount of OSes, but it's also a significant drawback. The rationale for the limitation is evident, but it's not quite a replacement - imagine if Obtanium solely worked on Samsung devices.

Use Arch Linux, or an alternative (EndeavourOS), and enable AUR (Arch User Repository) support. And use an AUR helper like paru or yay.

And what is not in the pacman/extras repo may be in the AUR, if it is not there then the git-clone command is there, if the three above fail then the program does not exist.

@summoner001, that's at best equivalent to Fedora's COPR or openSUSE's OBS. It's not a way for individual users to automatically acquire updates to packages not yet uploaded to any package management repository via a local GUI-based application.

AUR is equivalent with Obtainium. Pamac (package manager with GUI) can handle AUR packages on arch linux (and on Endeavour OS). But yes. If the package isn't available in AUR than use git... and you can build it for yourself.

@summoner001, compiling sources provided by git isn't vaguely equivalent to what Obtanium provides. This is a discussion of how to automatically replace downloaded binaries from source-control websites' repositories' releases (which are not exposed to git).

What you're describing is equivalent to:

1. Downloading a repository's sources via git;
2. Compiling those with Android Studio; and
3. Installing them via pm (or the adb install wrapper).

Let's say then that for you there is no alternative to Obtainium. I have offered an alternative AUR+Pamac(GUI). AUR has the most packages. There are very few applications that are not there. Or very specific. If there is no package in AUR and it is difficult to use git, what do you recommend?

@summoner001, #1053 (comment) recommends something that is very close, for GitHub repositories. For non-GitHub repositories, #1053 (comment) is closest. Otherwise, your suggestion is as good as any other.

Hi everyone,

Since then, I started building my own tool named dynapt as in DYNamic APT reposiory, which auto-downloads DEB and AppImage files, and will in the future handle binaries.

Since it serves a local APT reposiory, it works with apt as well as any existing CLI and GUI supporting APT.

It's still way experimental though, you can try it by following this tutorial.
