Custom onChange makes aria-select no longer work

So when I set a custom onChange for my form data logic, checking the select with VoiceOver, it no longer lets me know in the dropdown list which item is already selected. Looking through how y'all set aria-select with onChange, I am wondering if there is a way to allow me to do a custom onChange and still have that aria-select logic in place.
