make a contributing doc or section of the readme. be sure to mention that you should have npm v2 or the github deps probably won't work.

Hm. Zach was having issues with 1.3.2. It looks like github deps were introduced in 1.1.65. I guess if 1.4.9 works for you we can take that as the infimum.

My usual advice when people can't install React is to upgrade npm.
