Hey @sumneko, I have been meaning to add a favicon to the website, and I was going to use the current logo, but then I checked the license for the original Lua logo:

Permission is hereby granted, without written agreement and without license or royalty fees, to use, copy, and distribute this logo for any purpose, including commercial applications, subject to the following conditions:

• The origin of this logo must not be misrepresented; you must not claim that you drew the original logo.
• The only modification you can make is to adapt the orbiting text to your product name.
• The logo can be used in any scale as long as the relative proportions of its elements are maintained.

Condition number two states that the logo should not be modified, unless the change is to the orbiting text. Therefor, I quickly modified the original logo like so:

Thoughts on using this?

Forgot to mention, this doesn't actually solve the favicon problem still because the "Language Server" text will be far too small to be readable. Not really sure what to make the favicon 😵‍💫

I prefer the current LLS logo. I can't say if the current logo was made by modifying the original, though.

The current one is definitely a little more unique. I would probably prefer a completely different logo so that it is truly unique, but I'm not sure what it could be, considering the name of the project and organization being so "lua".

I don't mind this much. Using the original Lua logo is also fine.

Gears symbolize a well-functioning mechanism.
The color scheme is associated with the original Lua-logo

maybe keep the ring and dot? makes it more recognisable as "lua"

I'm afraid that this logo is, like the current logo, too derivative of the official Lua logo and thus goes against rule number 2 in the logo's license. I think we either have to just "be okay" with changing the orbiting text, or somehow come up with a unique logo that in some way, without using the Lua logo, still conveys "Lua".

Large icons look good, but the effect is rather poor for small icons. I think there are too many details in the icons, and a simple yet recognizable pattern might be sufficient.

I still think there are too many details in these logos, and they are full of edges, which doesn't conform to the current mainstream aesthetic of roundness.

I have no objection to the concept of using gears in the design, but gears themselves are difficult to make aesthetically pleasing. Let's look at a few examples:

After losing most of its details, the Lua icon still remains highly recognizable, while the icons above can only rely on intricate details for recognition.
