Manuals are overwhelming - maybe provide a guide for sections that are useful?
Mention where in the manual the example code is walked through, to help them complete the task more quickly
Be more explicit about not expecting the candidate to have experience with this scripting language.
Mention that we will be discussing their process for tackling this problem, since it's as important as the solution.
