This API : https://wiki.mozilla.org/DevTools/Highlighter
will allow you to inject overlays without injecting stuff within DOM. Plus, it works with e10s.

Wow this is very cool I did not know this was able to be done without injecting into the DOM. It has to read from the DOM though right?
