Usability Interview - Alex

Alex → with CAPS

  • has played with the new interface since back in dec

His role with CAPS

  • with planning support and merged with capital planning
  • his role involves in process improvement work stream, a little separate than capital planning
  • he does work in the neighborhood study part of capital planning
    • the previous iteration of the product he would use for this
  • also works in the statement of needs report
  • relationship with capital planning how he got invited to family launch

Other tools he use

  • outlook, microsoft, excel, powerpoint, word
  • zola a considerable amount of sites to identify sites
  • have some experience with power bi
  • also spends a lot of time on ZAP
    • lot of work with the pipeline to team using data from here

Task 1: Brooklyn

  • wants to ignore the district type but he can’t

  • then selects cd and select Brooklyn

    • no way to select all for district number
    • tries to select multiple dn but cant so selects one
  • tries council but also can only select one at a time

  • tried filter at first ^^ but wants to see Brooklyn as a whole so starts selecting from the map

    • tries to unselect his previous choice to refresh but cannot
  • ends up selecting Brooklyn 1

  • starts looking at the project card list

  • a little confusing about the page numbers since he cant tell from the get go that there are multiple pages since it only display the current page number

  • since he can’t filter project type

  • time: 3:02 (2:50 for finding a project, and the rest to find managing agency)

  • additional comments

    • it would be helpful to know the context for the full name (like for when he is looking a ten eyck plaza reconstruction what is b386-119m is)
    • it would be nice to filter with satellite view because he isn’t not familiar with the current neighborhood he is looking at
      • it would add value since he could see the current state of it
      • as he able to see the broad view of what the neighborhood look like, although it wouldn’t be the most detailed, it would explain the buildings by showing there is a park here vs just the building footprints

Brooklyn project cont.

  • find contributions related to project, past, present, and future commitments
  • first instinct is to compare it with another project
  • he can see the description and commitment but harder to pinpoint specifically who is contributing it
  • got confused since it looks like the things in different color he could click into it
  • seems easy to read with the timeline
  • can’t identify sponsors since the commitment details are 0
    • look into another project still harder to tell the contributor since the labelling just said description and commitment
  • time 3:50

Task 2: Bronx

  • not familiar with where harris park is so he used google to help locate information about where cd harris park is
  • once he checks he figures its out its bronx 7
  • questions why it jumps from 12 to 27 for bronx district numbers since there are only 12 district numbers in bronx
  • able to locate point
  • time: 0:50

managing agency and project type

  • found pretty quickly and wonder what other type are related to parks and rec
  • time: 10-20 seconds

contributor information

  • still hard to find contributor since he can find what the commitment is towards, can’t tell directly if its from seed funding, from park, its not specific enough

additional comments

  • has been using the new one since dec
  • he liked the older one since there was more filtering capabilities since there were more choices to fitler from like managing agency, spon agency
  • the part that was clunky from the old cpe was the project card would take up half the map
  • saw the switch toggle filter as confusing in the old cpe
  • liked the filtering with multiple criteria

task 3: central park

  • knows the location already so he does not need to filter by district
  • it can be frustrating that he cannot unselect all his filters
    • even when he reselects cd it did not cancel out his previous filter
  • now he is going to the home page url to reset the filter
  • not sure if he can see the other points unless he finds the dot in the small polygon
  • time: 1 min
  • why did he pick the project
    • not much reason
    • found it was misleading that the polygon has the whole area of the park even though most likely it does not take up the whole area
    • and tried to pick a point thats more unique to central park
  • the old cpe when you clicked on a polygon and there is other projects, there is a wheel to see other projects

is there a preference (map vs filter)

  • if he doesn’t know the location, most likely filter
  • if he does know, he can pinpoint through map
  • and if he was looking at a neighborhood study, he would want to filter for that criteria and would use the filtering for the map

difficult to understand

  • finding the sponsor and contributor was very confusing
  • the way it zooms out where there is multiple projects because the projects are such small dots, its hard to see where the other related projects are
  • central park, it has the location (the polygon) as the entire park so it is hard to pick out the individual ones
  • the east ferry route is confusing since it includes all the area in midtown (around 5th avenue)
  • again the zoom out with the point size makes it hard to see
