I had ignored two users on my phone client due to them spamming (with mentions) and sending abuse images. When I opened the same room in Nheko, the messages from both users, including abuse images, were still shown and cached to disk
The server admins for the space had removed the users and redacted the messages, but apparently that didn't get handled properly by matrix.org. Therefore, ignoring the users is my only way to prevent spam and illegal and disturbing material from being shown on my devices.
Not only are the images that were sent disturbing, it is illegal in my country to even have them on disk. Therefore, this unfortunately opens myself up to legal liability. It also creates the risk that something NSFW shows up on my screen when my partner is in a video call and subjects him and his coworkers to problems with his employer. As much as I love the Nheko client otherwise, I have to stop using it until this is resolved due to this risk to myself and my partner.
To Reproduce
Ignore a user in another client
Open the room in Nheko
Scroll if necessary to see the messages
See the abuse images / messages
What happened?
Messages and images were shown from both ignored users.
Images were cached to disk.
I then verified that the user was shown on the ignore list in Nheko
Closed Nheko
Cleared the Nheko cache on disk
Restarted Nheko
Scrolled back to the messages. The abusive messages and images from ignored users were still shown
The images were re-cached to disk
Ignoring the users on the phone client (schildi) did prevent their messages from being displayed on that client
Expected behavior
Messages from ignored users are ignored
