What version of DOOM is best?

Given there are multiple versions of DOOM / DOOM II / MASTER LEVELS / PLUTONIA / TNT in the DOOM + DOOM II Steam release, which version of each is the best the original or the re-release WADs?

For Doom II and The Ultimate Doom, it's best to use the original WADs patched to v1.9 (the ones located in the base directory of the Steam release). The WADs in the rerelease directory are censored in multiple ways.

If the re-release WADs are renamed to doomkex.wad and doom2kex.wad, they can be used alongside the originals in WadFusion—that way the script will only extract the new widescreen assets that were added to them, without all the censored assets.

TNT and Plutonia are censored and have widescreen assets in the re-release too, and those can be renamed and included as tntkex.wad and plutoniakex.wad as well, but if you're fusing them with Doom II, it doesn't make a difference which version is used, as the censored assets won't get extracted.

For the Master Levels, only the original 20 individual WADs, or the masterlevels.wad from the "DOOM + DOOM II" re-release are supported. Which one is used doesn't matter, the result will be practically identical.

For No Rest for the Living, I would recommend using the version in the re-release, as it contains a new intermission background.

If IWADs from the Unity or KEX-based re-releases are also included (must be named doomunity.wad, doom2unity.wad, tntunity.wad, plutoniaunity.wad or doomkex.wad, doom2kex.wad, tntkex.wad, plutoniakex.wad), WadFusion will extract widescreen assets from them. These versions can also be used as the main WADs for extraction, but do keep in mind that they are censored.

The versions of nerve.wad in these re-releases include a unique intermission screen, but renaming them isn't necessary—WadFusion will recognize them, and they aren't censored the way the IWADs are.

Well, that's down to the user's choice. Maybe somebody out there prefers having green crosses on their medkits and a moustache-less moustache man. The tool is designed to be flexible to a degree.

Then again, just saying that the re-release versions are censored already kind of implies that the originals are "better".
