Volume boost?

What exactly is this function doing? It doesn't seem louder, but it does seem to make the voice clearer and a bit ?boomier? Without raising the volume.

Very confused and was hoping there might be some documentation that might explain it, didn't find any so I'm asking here.

Sorry if this is weird, I don't want to damage my hearing any more but I do notice it's significantly clearer voices when boosted a bit.
