We should push down to Spark the checks that there is at most one item whenever it applies:

zero-or-one(json-file("file.json").field)

json-file("file.json").field + 3

json-file("file.json").field || "foo"

if(json-file("file.json").field) then... else ...

In other words, the checks should be done without ever collecting the whole RDD.
