Likely the change is not being reflected somewhere internally. Changing back to default 'bitcoin' username causes the connection to work

Which service did you encounter this with? Maybe a week ago a support user complained that this happened to him, but when I tested changing the username, my dependent services did initially complain and die as a result, but as soon as they restarted (on their own) everything was fine again.

It must have been an external wallet, but alas I do not recall. Did you try an external app?
