I want to use the generator for a project, where i am only using the standalone player plugin, without the whole publisher. Does the generated CSS work anyway?

Depends on the version you are using. The generated CSS shouldn't be very wordpress-specific but was created vor version 1 of the player. Haven't tested it with recent versions :/
