Updated file not saving after a successful put

I am trying to use dasel from a github action

      - name: Update my yaml
        working-directory: ${{ github.workspace }}/my/files
        run: |
          dasel put -t string -f config.yaml -s '.some.path' -v myvalue \ 
          dasel -f config.yaml -s '.some.path' 

The output of the dasel put shows the correctly updated yaml file, but then the result of the following dasel query returns the original value, and the file does in fact still contain the original value.

What am I doing wrong here? I tried using a simple string replacement task and that is working fine, so definitely something related to my dasel use case.

      - name: Switch flux image automation to target this branch
        uses: Nambers/[email protected]
        with:
          path:  ${{ github.workspace }}/my/files/config.yaml
          oldString: 'oldval'
          newString: 'newval'
          showFileContent: true

this works fine, and the file ends up with the replaced string.

Hey @joshuadmatthews, this is a little confusing.

The fact that the 2nd dasel command outputs the expected value suggests the file was in-fact updated.

Does replacing the action with this make any difference?

- name: Update my yaml
        run: |
          dasel put -t string -f ${{ github.workspace }}/my/files/config.yaml -s 'some.path' -v myvalue \ 
          dasel -f ${{ github.workspace }}/my/files/config.yaml -s 'some.path'

I think you misread, the second dasel command is returning the original value not the updated value that is expected.

Same issue regardless of where the workspace path is defined.

Oh sorry I did - Do you have an example yaml file I could take a look at?

It appears it's writing the changed file to stdout rather than to the input file. This is a bug and I'll take a look at it.

Hey @joshuadmatthews I've just released a fix for this here: https://github.com/TomWright/dasel/releases/tag/v2.0.2

It'll take a little while for it to be updated in homebrew but you'll be able to download the binaries almost immediately.
