Investigate decoupling role from code

What steps will reproduce the problem?
Currently the "roles" are tied to the code. It would be nice to have a way to 
create a new role without having to change code. Some steps already taken in 
this direction (with different folder names for sample configuration, etc) but 
some areas of the code still depend on role-specific definitions.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?
