Section 2: Raising Awareness and Assessing Interest

Some notes from our discussion during the January 23rd meeting.

• “Presenting RSE introductory materials” - what does that look like?
  • Retracted papers from buggy code, what is an RSE?
  • Audience dependent, not everyone sees themselves as an RSE but may be doing RSE work, not everyone wants to be/become/consider themselves RSEs
  • Some stigma around the title of RSE (researchers not wanting to be labeled engineers or didn’t study engineering, etc.), possibly better to focus on the research software and the work being done vs the label/title
  • Definitely still value in having people involved in the research and/or programming but don’t consider themselves RSEs…as people who need/use the software or who are doing the coding
• US-RSE as an important factor in connecting people from the same institution (other outside associations too)
• Recommendations not great for introverts or remote work (or new or early career, etc)
  • Can help to find a mentor or colleague that can direct or connect
