I don't have samples folder in the cuda directory, where should I point CUDA_SDK_ROOT_DIR=/usr/local/cuda-11.0/ ??

Did you download the CUDA toolkit? This will contain the examples. I don't think I've tested it on Cuda 11 yet, the code is a few years old in the meantime:)
