User feedback copied from https://wordpress.org/support/topic/adding-a-custom-colors-palette/

Hello,
I can’t find how we can create our own colors palette for the theme without replace existing one?
You can add some color but not create a new palette.
thanks !

To add a custom color palette, one first has to Open the Styles sidebar, click on colors, click on the default palette, and then select "Custom" between the default palette and the palette presets.

From the user feedback, it seems that this flow is not so discoverable.

Thanks for reporting this issue, @carolinan .

The steps you mentioned (opening Styles sidebar → clicking colors → clicking default palette → selecting "Custom") are for adding custom colors to an existing palette, not creating a new one.

You can observe that after changing palettes, any previously added custom colors get reset. This indicates that the current workflow is ( provided the video as well ).

  • Select the base palette you want to use
  • Then add custom colors (additional colors) to that selected palette

The user feedback is specifically requesting the ability to create our own colors palette for the theme without replacing existing one - which is functionality we don't currently have.

  • This would be a valuable enhancement to consider.

It is a separate palette.
This is what the interface looks like after one is added:

Screenshot of the color options of a heading block. The panel shows two palettes.

It is not added to the theme palette.

Thank you for sharing these screenshots, @carolinan. I'd like to add some observations based on the workflow shown:

  • When adding a custom color (red in this case), The UI shows both the preset colors and the custom color together ( so users can choose any color out of them ) like shown in below.

Image

  • If a custom color is added, the palette preset selection UI disappears as now palette colors are mixture of presets and custom color.
  • After removing the custom color, the palette preset selection reappears, showing that the palette is no longer a mixture of preset and custom colors.

  • Based on this behavior and the original user feedback, it seems the user is looking for the ability to create entirely new color palettes that would exist alongside the preset palettes, rather than just adding individual custom colors to existing presets.

This would be a useful enhancement that would allow users to maintain their own themed palettes without modifying the existing presets. Perhaps we could consider adding a "Create New Palette" option that would let users build and name custom palettes from scratch, which would then appear in the preset selection list.

Please correct me if I've misunderstood anything. I'm still learning the intricacies of the color palette system and would value your insights on this matter.

I believe resetting is a separate issue from not being able to find the custom palette.
