Extending Medusa product/variant

Hello!
I've set up Medusa for development and everything is running smoothly.
I'm working on a merch shop, and a nice feature I've seen on other websites are option images/thumbnails.
For example: when selecting a colour of a product, there's an image of the colour, or the product in that colour instead of just text.
From what I'm seeing Medusa doesn't support this out of the box, but Medusa Extender probably should allow me to do that, right?
I've read through some of the docs and it seems like adding some custom fields shouldn't be too hard, however how does that work with the admin? Is it possible to easily add said option images into the admin view if I add the fields with medusa extender?
In general, I would appreaciate any pointer in the right direction - I'm still diving into this project:)
