What would be a reliable calculation to use for authorship (major article contributors)?

Right now I'm thinking non-whitespace contributions, additions/changes to least 25% of the article.

If editing would be open to the public, would this prone to abuse? How could it be exploited and what are some easy steps to prevent it.
