It’s time to optimize Simplified Chinese translation.

Hi,
I found that the Simplified Chinese translation in the software is somewhat difficult to understand, but the Traditional Chinese translation is very good and makes the meaning of some options easy to comprehend. I suggest directly converting the Traditional Chinese to Simplified Chinese to compensate for the shortcomings of the Simplified Chinese translation. Alternatively, please have the Simplified Chinese translator adjust certain parts to optimize the translation. Thank you. (In general, Traditional Chinese and Simplified Chinese only differ in their writing systems; the syntax and vocabulary are generally identical and can be directly converted.)

Why did you close this issue? Sadly we currently do not have anybody working on the Chinese translations thus we depend on users to report translations to be improved. Could you please point us to some of those difficult to understand translations with a hint on how to improve on them, such that we can fix this?

Not sure why you closed this one as this one is not yet resolved. The current Continuous Build follows your suggestion and replaces the Simplified Chinese translations by translations generated via Google Translate from the Traditional Chinese translations. Maybe you find the time to take a look at this and report if the resulting Simplified Chinese translations are any better. If yes, we can keep them, if not I can role this back to the original Simplified Chinese translations. Please let me know!

Thank you for your prompt response. I closed this issue because I had been using software versions prior to v3.1. Upon installing the latest v3.1 version, I noticed significant improvements in many translations. To avoid causing any inconvenience, I promptly closed the issue.

I had previously raised a query because I was assisting a colleague with the software and found some terms difficult to explain. When I saw that the Traditional Chinese translations were very clear, I thought I would make a suggestion.

There are many issues, but most are minor. In the older versions, the more difficult-to-understand translations were mainly found in: Config -> Events and Alarm. For example, "Show on BT" was translated as "在BT上" ("on BT"). The new translation is "显示于BT" ("display on BT"), which is now much easier to understand. It means "event stamps marked on the BT curve."

I'm sorry to hear that there is no Simplified Chinese translator, but believe me, you have done an excellent job. I have been using the Chinese version of the software since version 0.6 and have not found it too challenging. As my understanding of roasting has increased, I have been able to utilize more advanced features without much trouble.

Google Translate does a pretty good job with individual words, and current AI translations are very smooth. Sometimes, we can use AI translation to assist us. After translating, it can help check the syntax and language logic. For example, with my poor English skills, I can still communicate fluently with you in English. Haha 🤣 .

I have initially tried the Continuous build. Some translations have been resolved, but new issues have also arisen. These issues may be due to political and other uncontrollable factors.

For example, "Config -> Port" is called "连接埠" in Traditional Chinese, but in Simplified Chinese regions, it is called "通讯端口" or translated as "端口设置." Especially for the younger generation, who rarely encounter Traditional Chinese characters, "连接埠" might be a specialized term that only their fathers or grandfathers understand.

Another example is "Config -> Sampling." "Sampling" refers to the data collection frequency. In the previous Simplified Chinese version, the translation was correct. However, after converting to Traditional Chinese, it became "取样," which in Simplified Chinese roughly means: 取样 is the selection of a subset or a statistical sample (termed sample for short) of individuals from within a statistical population to estimate characteristics of the whole population. .(form WIKI) 🤣

Other issues might be due to my personal reading habits. I have gotten used to the previous Simplified Chinese version, and the current translation makes me feel like I'm using new software.

As you can see from this case, I understand the difficulties in translation. I also understand your challenges. I regret bringing up this issue and am sorry I couldn't be of more help, but please believe me, you have already done a great job.

BTW, I noticed that the software uses QM translation files. In the past, for my convenience, I have translated such files. I think maybe I could try to open this file and improve the Google translation content to make it more understandable. However, I cannot guarantee my working hours, but I will try to do so.

Thanks for looking at this. What is your suggestion. Step back to the v3.1 Simplified Chinese translations, or go forward with those now in the continuous build?

In any case it would be great if you could directly improve translations in the Qt *.ts files, best using the Qt Linguist app.

From what I’ve seen on social media, Chinese users haven’t raised any issues with the current translation. It’s possible they don’t use the more detailed settings much.

After testing the Traditional Chinese translation and doing some research, I’ve noticed some differences in terminology between regions that use Traditional Chinese and those that use Simplified Chinese. While the two scripts can be directly converted, there are still some differences in how specialized terms are used. For example, Traditional Chinese regions tend to stick to more classical terms, while Simplified Chinese regions went through a language reform in the past. This has led to some generational differences in vocabulary, especially among those born after 2000. Take the term ‘Prot’ as an example—I’m pretty sure many young people in Simplified Chinese regions wouldn’t understand ‘连接埠,’ but they’d definitely know ‘连接端口.’”

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I will revert the CN translations to those of v3.1. If you find some specific terms in menus/labels used in Artisan v3.1 that would benefit from a different translation, then just send me those and I will make replace those translations with your suggestions for the next release.
