The entire codebase leaves a lot to be desired and is honestly kind of a mess. It could stand to be refactored from the ground up, and would make a nice addition to the next major version (2.0).

Additionally, it should utilize PHP 8.0 or even 8.1 methods and as such will require the necessary version on release.
