Hi,

I am a Tartube noob. It seems like FFmpeg is needed for Tartube to work correctly.

Q1. Which Tartube version (listed below) should I download to ensure Tartube will work correctly?

Q2. How to install FFmpeg correctly? Can you tell me step by step FFmpeg installation process?

Q3. Is only [MS Windows (64-bit) and FFmpeg installer] and [install-tartube-with-ffmpeg-2.5.059-64bit.exe] does not need me to download FFmpeg separately and install FFmpeg separately manually?

Q4. Is it other versions [MS Windows (64-bit) installer] and [install-tartube-2.5.059-64bit.exe] and [portable edition] and [tartube-2.5.059-64bit-portable.zip] would need me to download FFmpeg separately and install FFmpeg separately manually?

These are the versions I saw:

[MS Windows (64-bit) installer] [MS Windows (64-bit) and FFmpeg installer] [portable edition], source https://tartube.sourceforge.io/

[install-tartube-2.5.059-64bit.exe] [install-tartube-with-ffmpeg-2.5.059-64bit.exe] [tartube-2.5.059-64bit-portable.zip], source https://github.com/axcore/tartube/releases

I am using Windows 10 Pro

Thank you.

Currently there seems to be a problem with the newest version on Windows at least. See #666

I would download the last version with the ffmpeg binary included.
https://github.com/axcore/tartube/releases/download/v2.5.040/install-tartube-with-ffmpeg-2.5.040-64bit.exe

I always use the version with ffmpeg included when installing on Windows. Linux installs ffmpeg separately with no problem.

Even the installer version on Windows installs in the 'C:\Users{username}\AppData\Local' folder, so it is not an installer that requires admin privileges, not much different to the portable version.

I downloaded tartube from your link https://github.com/axcore/tartube/releases/download/v2.5.040/install-tartube-with-ffmpeg-2.5.040-64bit.exe and I use virustotal to scan it and the result shows "Bkav Pro W32.AIDetectMalware" https://www.virustotal.com/gui/file/425bdf8c5b9195273d34a07bcedb7a9e9ae404adf3f70279bbf0748fe974f45c
Is it safe to install it?

I am not the author. I only gave the link from the original github repository so that you could find the correct one.

I cannot tell you whether the file is safe, however I have used it many times without any apparent issue.

When I googled "Bkav Pro W32.AIDetectMalware" there are many comments about false positives, but you will have to make up your own mind. You can look at almost all the code yourself.

Please try v2.5.062 which corrects a problem in last week's release, affecting Windows users only.

@wonderkid, the following responses apply to Windows users only:

  1. Download FFmpeg during Tartube's setup, by clicking the button. Alternatively, install FFmpeg from the menu in Tartube's main window. In both cases, Tartube will handle everything for you.

  2. The Tartube-FFmpeg installer contains a copy of FFmpeg, so after you install Tartube, there is no need to install FFmpeg. (You will still need to install yt-dlp, of course.)

  3. The other two installers do not contain a copy of FFmpeg, so you must install it yourself, using the methods described above.

@wonderkid, there is no need to worry about Virus warnings, unless several different anti-virus packages all report the same problem.

Speaking more broadly, you are taking a risk every time you install software written by someone else. If you don't have the skills or the time to check the source code, then you can still consider for how long a piece of software has been available, how many users have "starred" it, and whether other users have warned against using it. Then decide for yourself how big the risk is.

@axcore
Q5. "You will still need to install yt-dlp, of course." > How do I install the yt-dlp that you mentioned in your reply?
Q6. If I have installed [MS Windows (64-bit) and FFmpeg installer] or [install-tartube-with-ffmpeg-2.5.059-64bit.exe] does it mean I have already installed yt-dlp?

Thanks

Q5. In Tartube's setup window, when you first run it; otherwise from the menu in Tartube's main window.

Q6. yt-dlp is updated frequently, so NONE of the Tartube installers include it. You must install it using either of the methods in Q5.

Where to see how long a piece of software has been available?

How many stars are good? (https://github.com/axcore/tartube right sidebar shows 2.1k stars, I guess this are the stars)

Where to see "whether other users have warned against using it"?

Thanks

You could click on the commits button to see the first commit (upload), or see the history of releases.

commit2

How many stars are good?

Any number above zero, I suppose.

Where to see "whether other users have warned against using it"?

Wherever users of this type of software can be found. For video downloaders, reddit is a good place (see the youtube-dl and datahoareder sub-reddits).
