I think it could be very cool if the exporting application could embed a master audio file into the dawproject. This also raised the idea of including export settings in the Project.xml

Including export settings:

  • which audio channels should be rendered (especially useful for stems)?
  • which arrangement time range should be rendered
  • which audio format(s) should be exported and which to prefer if there is no multi-format export?
  • which dithering setting should be used?
  • which target samplerate should be used?

Embedding an audio master:

  • would be useful for audio preview in
    • some simple dawproject file browser app
    • on a website
    • in Bitwig Studio's sidebar browser
  • maybe not only one single audio file but even multiple stems?

In general:

  • the export settings should be in the Project.xml
  • the audio file reference for the embedded audio master should be in the Metadata.xml
  • Even if no audio master is embedded, the export information still would be very useful if the export settings would be transferred as good as possible to their DAW so they can reuse them

Btw, embedding a rendered master would also be helpful for users for checking which audible elements got lost during transfer to another DAW
