Template authoring tool/guide

The authoring tool is designed very well and is very lightweight, but only being able to use the built in templates is somewhat limiting. Is there a plan currently or in the future to either add the ability to modify templates using the current (or new) tool or to have a guide as to how to do it (without having to manually go through the code, make changes, and recompile)?
