According to https://bugzilla.mindrot.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2755, OpenSSH 10.0 will support wildcards in AuthorizedKeysFile. This means that we could have e.g. AuthorizedKeysFile=.ssh/authorized_keys.d/* and deprecate this project.

We should verify whether this ignores filenames with leading dots like we do here.
