[vtk-hdf] support for text field data?

Currently, strings or string literals are just written out as array of numbers (type char). We'd have to check what type of variable strings vtk accepts. One issue is that it only accepts ascii and we have a workaround for that in place for string literals, which doesn't work for variable-length strings, though...
