Hi.

I'm interested in building a drone based on your project. I'm not an electronics engineer (SW engineer), I've just:

  • downloaded/installed Kicad 8
  • used the PCBway plugin to upload to convert to Gerber and upload to PCBway (automagically)
  • about to hit go on the PCBway cart (~$88 fyi) and I've got the following question from one of their engineers:
Hi,

Thanks for your inquiry on PCBWay.

Our engineer has checked your file, please check below.

There are some vias in SMD pads, pls check attached picture. Should we fill these vias with non-conductive resin?

If not, there may be soldering problem.

If you accept vias filled with resin, do you need all the vias filled with resin or just those vias in pad filled with resin?

Awaiting for your information to proceed.

Do you know how to respond?
FYI, I did see that they have a share/sell button on the checkout cart, so that you could create this project with them then sell it through them, so I guess some royalties would go to @dridri.

Any advice gratefully received!

Hello, thank you for your interest in this project !

If it could explain why, I have to admit that I'm only a software engineer too, and self-taught electronics. But it flies fairly well now (https://www.instagram.com/reel/C_WF1FXOfhW/)

These vias are no big deal and are easy to solder without any problem. But we could probably move them to avoid adding resin (I don't know the pros and cons about resins) and make PCBWay happy. Should be fixed by 493f25de06

Be aware that hand soldering the two 100pins CM4 connectors needs a lot of patience, desoldering braid, and relatively low temperature tin (I use a ~220C° solder). A hot-air station is also needed for the small ICs with hidden pads.

You made me realize that I deleted the wiki's Building page a long time ago, I'll try to find some time this week to rewrite it.

hey, thanks for your prompt response!

could you even add the 100 pin connectors to the schema? - then PCBway could do the soldering :) it's a bit beyond me tbh! looks like the parts are here:

what do you think about creating a project? where users could just click order and get a working board that they just need to plug the CM4 on it - or is that a bit too much of a headache?

Also is the bom generated with the pcb way tool correct?
