Profile - Notifications "Mark as Read" behavior consistency and improvements

I'm a bit confused with how I should be "marking as read" the notifications in my profile page. Sometimes clicking in the blank spaces in the notification highlight clears them, sometimes I need to follow the link, sometimes it takes two visits of the link to clear the highlight. Perhaps consider a button dedicated to marking a notification as read (on the far right, a column of checkboxes or some sort of button maybe), and maybe a "Mark All as Read" button at the top of the page.

Ah, the notifications are marked as read on hover after a certain number of seconds. We can definitely add a little checkbox that does the same.

To me, the mark on hover behavior is fine once you understand this is how things work. Less clicks and buttons might be a desirable thing, design-wise. Maybe somehow indicate when the hovering is active (maybe slightly modulate the brightness of the highlight on hover) ?
