even with the pwa primed, there is a noticeable flicker when icons are viewed for the first time.

More observations: with FF (Ubuntu), the first time the sector context menu is shown, the animation doesn't render. Instead the hexagons pop up after a brief but perceptible delay at their final, expanded position. This might be caused by the hexagon SVGs not being rendered into a bitmap yet.
