.Sh DESCRIPTION
.Nm shaip
is a more advanced
.Nm ping
probe for systems monitoring, which can be configured to know about
routers and other equipment on which other devices depend.
.Pp
.Nm shaip
is meant to be used to monitor state changes in network hosts, and report
systems or network equipment which have changed between being \fIup\fR and being
\fIdown\fR.
.Pp
.Bl -tag -width flag
.It Fl c Ar config file
is the configuration file to use. The format is simple - each line consists
of three fields separated by colons (":"): \fIname\fR, \fIaddress\fR and
\fIparent\fR.
If the object is not a dependant on any other object, the \fIparent\fR field
(and the second delimiter) can be left out. The \fIaddress\fR field can be either
an IP address or a DNS name.
.It Fl s Ar state file
is the file in which to store the last known state of the objects in the
\fIconfig file\fR. This file must, of course, be writeable by
.Nm shaip .
.It Fl a
tells shaip to report the current state of all the objects, disregarding
the hierarchy.
.It Fl n Ar number of runs
sets the number of times
.Nm shaip
probes the objects. Default is 3 times.
.It Fl P Ar interpacket delay
sets the number of ms to wait between sending each packet. Default is 5 ms.
.It Fl T Ar timeout
sets the number of seconds to wait for replies.
.It Fl v
increase verbosity. each appearance of this flag will make
.Nm shaip
print out a little more information about what it is doing.
.It Fl t
reports roundtrip time for each object, provided
.Fl a
is also given.
.Fl w
tells
.Nm shaip
to report warnings when some but not all probes are lost to an object. Normally
those objects are considered \fIup\fR.
.Fl D Ar delay
sets the delay between each run.
