Executive Summary - #592
High Level
HIP 79 introduces a framework for rewarding different types of mapping tasks for the Mobile Network. The aim is to realign incentive models and address challenges related to incentivizing subscribers and mapping activities. The proposal adjusts the rewards system for Service Providers and Mappers in the Mobile Network. The key changes are reducing the Service Provider reward bucket from 20% to 10% and increasing the Mapper reward bucket from 10% to 20%.
The motivation behind these adjustments is the discovery that using MOBILE tokens to incentivize subscribers poses compliance and regulatory risks. Meanwhile, coupling mappers with coverage goals provides a better approach to mapping and ensures a complete coverage map. To achieve this, the proposal introduces reward points for mappers based on their contribution to mapping tasks.
How Mobile Mapping Would Work
Mobile mapping rewards would take 2 distinct forms: discovery mapping and verification mapping.
Discovery Mapping
Discovery mapping gives rewards to subscribers who voluntarily share location data through the Helium Mobile (Service Provider) app. By identifying coverage opportunities, subscribers can boost Proof of Coverage (PoC) rewards in specific areas. Service Providers can act as oracles to access the mapping data and stake MOBILE tokens on relevant hexes to boost coverage.
Verification Mapping
Verification mapping rewards are earned by mappers who verify or invalidate modeled coverage by measuring radio signal strength within specific hexes. A reward point system incentivizes mappers to report readings across multiple hexes and validate unique radios. You do not have to subscribe to a Service Provider service to participate in verification mapping rewards.
Implementation
The deployment impact of this proposal involves onboarding mappers and subscribers to the Solana blockchain, adjusting reward buckets, integrating mapping data with the Mobile rewards Oracle, implementing algorithms for hex recharge and rewarding, and visualizing mapped hexes.
This will require work by all Helium Core Developers across the ecosystem on both on-chain and off-chain components.
