RE: It is straightforward to update Ubuntu. You can run the software updater from the menu (press the Windows key and search for software updater):

On my computer this is what I had to do:

on left side of the screen choose and run the software updater
from running software updater choose "Settings"
then choose "Ubuntu Software"

Do not see any searchable menu as you show, only tabs at top of page.
