Markdown table is not rendered if there is no line break before it

Let's say I have this Markdown table which immediately follows a paragraph:

abc
| 1   | 2  | 3    | 4   |
|---|---|---|---|
| -   | -  | -  | -  |
| a | b | c | d |

GitHub Preview renders it as a table but the markdown to DITA converter makes the entire table content appear inline in the "abc" paragraph until I add an extra new line before the table.
