Currently the gallery has no visual style or design -- it uses a barely-altered "minima" Jekyll template with a few simple customizations added for tabular data and the treatment of headers as colored bars, image blocks, and iframes in different gallery and detail page contexts.
In addition, there is some styling that is mixed into templates instead of separated into css / scss.
This could be improved by choosing a style to build off of and customizing it -- or dropping the GitHub pages auto-build and simply pushing Jekyll builds to pages from a custom theme.
Some relevant simple themes that are supported for GitHub pages:
