Is it possible to use Custom Links to retrieve external data?

From an article online I saw that it’s possible to use action/json syntax inside of a custom link to toggle the display of nodes on a chart. Are other actions possible, like for example retrieving data to populate my nodes with? Is there a list of possible actions somewhere? Thanks
