Don't have time to read your whole rant (jk), but I'll look into it later because I'm in the process of switching from Thunderbird. I've recently spent a few days with both mutt-kz and alot and to me it seems the former is more responsive and featureful, so it's probably what I'll go with. Anyway, I found this, which helped me get a pretty good initial setup going for alot:
