Backup alternates between single file and multiple files

The backup occurs regularly but sometimes the result is a single .json file and other times it's a collection of markdown files. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to when it's one or the other. You can tell the difference by the file sizes in this image.

it's similar/same as #7 - the larger your database - the less reliably the switch to json works
