Installation of CentOS

Objective

The objective of this documentation is to install Centos

Instructions for installation

  1. Make sure that lan cable is connected.
  2. Press power button and get into the boot option by pressing boot key of machine its varies with machine to machine.
    E.g
    Acer - F2, Lenovo - F12 and Dell - Esc
  3. Enable network boot.
  4. Set network boot as first priority.
  5. Press F10 to save and exit boot changes.
  6. Once 4th step done machine gets restart and searches for Diskless Remote Boot Loader(DRBL) Server using Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP).
  7. It will display list of Linux distributions available like Ubuntu, CentOS, Fedora and Lubuntu.
  8. Choose CentOS and its version.

Pre-installation configuration

Now you can see window called centos installer click Next.

Keyboard layout
The next step would ask you to select the keyboard layout which should be USA for most english users.
Storage type
After the keyboard layout, comes the option select the type of storage on which CentOS is to be installed. For local hard drives, should be Basic storage.
Host Name
In the next step the anaconda installer asks for a hostname. So fill it appropriately. If not sure, just enter something like mypc or hplaptop.
Timezone
In timezone selection, select Asia(kolkata).
Root Password
Then enter root password.
Formatting
Now the wizard would like to know, how you wan’t to format the storage device. If you want to format the drive yourself, then select Custom Layout and create partitions as needed. It will display multiple options as follows, you can select any one them:
  1. Use Entire Space: It uses complete hard disk space
  2. Install Alongside: It installs centos beside existing OS.
  3. Replace Existing OS: It formats the existing os and installs centos on the same drive.
  4. Something Else: To create manual partitions, and install one of them.

we are selecting the fourth option, as preferable.

Copying files
Now the installer will start copying files. Nothing to do here.

Post-installation configuration

After the installation completes and reboots, the welcome wizard would come up which would further configure the system.

License Agreement
Like all software centos too comes with a license. So accept it.
Create User
Now its time to create a user account for yourself to be able to use the system.
Current date & time
Now input the current date and time and select the option to synchronize over the network.
Kdump
This is the last step of the welcome wizard that asks whether kdump should be enabled or not. It is a good idea to enable it.
  • After the previous step, the system would be rebooted, and finally comes to the login page.
